The Evolution of Animation

                                        History of Animation

Early Creation of Animation

Although animation has recently started to become popular in the 20th century, it has been around for thousands of years. Earliest signs of animation can be found thousands of years ago in caves. The drawings show different slides in which animals and people are moving. Although there is no possible way of viewing the images in motion it gives the impression of movement.

The picture on the right was found in caves and is thought to be 5 000 years old. It depicts two people wrestling.

Around 180 A.D something similar to a flip book was created in china. This enabled the user to quickly flip to pages to give the illusion of moving figures.

 Animation in the 19th Century

As time went on, new inventions made animation an attainable goal. Two interesting inventions came out within years of each other. The first was the thaumatrope (see movie to right) it was a toy that, when spun fast enough, would show a moving picture. Another invention was recognized shortly, it was called a phenakistscope. The phenakistscope, similar to the thaumatrope, used different pictures to give the illusion of movement.

Going forward to around 1903 Stuart Blackton was the first person to use stop motion and hand drawn animation. He was the first person to be considered a true animator.

After Blackton's success in animation many others started experimenting with it. One of the most known animators was Windsor McCay who was known for attention to detail. The result of this was very successful animated pieces.

Although there have been more developments this is history overview of animation.
