The Evolution of Animation

This site will provide you with information about the evolution of animation throughout time.  You will be brought back all the way to the beginning of animation and see it change and evolve to how we see it everyday.

 What is animation?

In traditional animation the creator draws individual frames of the subject they are animating. These frames differ slightly so when they are shown consecutively it looks like movement. Another form of animation is called stop motion animation. The subject is photographed then moved slightly. Similar to traditional animation, the slides are shown consecutively and it gives the illusion that the picture is moving. Stop motion animation has evolved into what is called clay animation (claymation). Claymation uses figures made out of clay. The figures are moved and then photographed.

 What makes animation work?

The principle of animation is that the separate frames blend together to show movement. It relies on a theory called persistence of vision. The theory indicates that the eye retains images for a fraction of a second. This means that humans see a blend of what is currently happening and what happened .04 seconds ago.  That is why humans see animation as a continuous movie.
